In 1980, God called together several men on the campus of Howard University to come together and pray. Within a year, they formed the Noonday Prayer Ministry, which still remains on the campus of Howard University. Three of these men, Donald Wright, James H. Lewis II, and Kermit A. Wheeler, were later challenged by Elder Robert Matthews of Evangel Cathedral, and compelled by God, to start a church that would serve the Washington Metropolitan area. Thus, Kingdom Life Christian Center (KLCC) was launched on September 21, 1986. Services were held at various hotels in Washington, DC, while prayer meetings and general activities were held in the homes of church members. These gatherings later assembled at the Barney Senior Center. In 1993, the church completed its first building project and moved into its current location at 5335 First Place, NE.
In 2003, KLCC’s name was changed to Dominion Church of Washington to reflect the ministry’s change in vision. However, along with this change came a great struggle which led to the resignation of Pastor Wright and a significant portion of the Dominion Church membership. Pastor Kermit Wheeler was named Senior Pastor of Dominion Church by Pastor Wright, and under his guidance, the church began to heal and move forward. In 2006, Pastor Wheeler selected Bishop J. Charles Carrington and the Full Gospel Christian Fellowship (FGCF) to serve as the spiritual covering. This selection was greatly welcomed by the leadership and membership of Dominion Church. Sadly, in November 2006, shortly after formally establishing a covenant relationship between Dominion Church and FGCF, Pastor Wheeler went home to be with the Lord. Bishop Carrington then assumed the dual role of Presiding Bishop and Senior Pastor pro tempore. In 2007, a Trustee Board and Finance Board were installed to manage the business and financial affairs of the ministry. Upon installation of these boards, Bishop Carrington placed Pastor Lewis on sabbatical, and assigned Elder Keith Strothers to the management of general ministry affairs.
Church Strengths At Dominion Church, our greatest strength is our love for God and love for one another. An additional strength is our ability to engage in meaningful praise and worship unto our Lord, under the direction of our anointed praise and worship team. We also strive for excellence in each endeavor, both corporately and individually. Having endured the resignation of a pastor and a significant portion of the membership, in addition to the untimely death of a beloved pastor, our members have developed the fortitude and determination required to press into the calling and destiny of Dominion Church for this generation and generations to come.
